BRASS PLAYING TIPS

#1 The Brass Player’s Cookbook / Creative Recipes for a Successful Performance. This is a great book, a stimulating collection of unique concepts on becoming a successful performer by 57 of today’s most outstanding brass professionals. Highly recommended reading. Steven Mead’s contribution: MOUTHPIECE WHISTLING AND RESISTANCE MOUTHPIECE INHALATION / Two Unconventional things to do with your mouthpiece that enable you to play with a more open, freer sound. All you need is your mouthpiece, tuner & a mirror. Click on the title to purchase from Amazon.

#2 The Denis Wick Euphonium Practice Mute. I’m not a gadget person. I’ve been playing the same instrument since 1999 and the same mouthpiece since 2003. I stick with what works for me and recommend the same for students. Having said that, I strongly believe in this euphonium practice mute for the sole purpose of enhancing sound and air movement. There are lots of mutes on the market – THIS is the best mute I’ve come across for sound development. You can buy it from Dillon Music or lots of places online. At just over $100 USD, it’s the best investment I’ve ever made in my playing. Check it out by clicking the title.

#3 Want to Improve Your Double & Triple Tonguing? Do you sound like a machine gun when you triple and double tongue? Try using the syllables “Di” & “Guh” instead of “Tu” & “Ku”. Remember, you can save chops by practicing your tonguing AWAY from the instrument. Think of all the time you have to work on tonguing – at work, in the car, in the shower – you get the picture. Repetition is the key ingredient to improving your tonguing. Time and dedication is all it takes…WATCH MY MINI MASTER CLASS ON DOUBLE TONGUING & PLAY ALONG: MASTER CLASS
